Is it True That God Has a Plan for You?

We often hear that God has a plan for our life but exactly where is that God has a plan for you Bible verse?  The following verse is sometimes offered as an answer to this question.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  (Jeremiah 29:11)

The problem is the above verse is not about you.  That verse is directed to the Jews who were being held captive in Babylon.  The prophet Jeremiah is telling them specifically that God has a plan for them – not for you.

Nevertheless, God does have a specific plan for you just like He had a specific plan for the Jews in Babylon; but I’m not aware of any single verse that establishes this simple truth.  To understand God’s specific plan for your life, you’ll need to do a much deeper study than one verse.  I’ve collected several verses that I believe will help you in your study.  Keep in mind, the Bible is alive and able to speak directly to you personally.  Before you read any further, stop and pray to God for clear guidance, enlightenment, and wisdom.  I’m certain your sincere prayer will provide you with a message from God that will open your eyes, heart, and mind as you study the following Scripture.

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”   (Proverbs 16:9)

You don’t have to look far in the pages of the Bible to discover God is in charge.  At the present time, Satan has been allowed some measure of control here on this earth, but ultimately God is in complete control at all times and can easily override anything the devil has planned.  If you’re a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, God has sent His Holy Spirit to live inside you and help you defeat the devil as well.  God is fully aware of you and is working moment-by-moment to guide you along His chosen path for your life.

God Knows Your Every Detail

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.  Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”   (Luke 12:6-7)

God is aware of you down to the finest detail.  If you are not yet a believer in Jesus Christ, God is waiting for you to come to Him.  As a believer, God has given you a special gift to use in His service.

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.  For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”  (Romans 12:3-8)

Your gift is the first solid clue you have in regard to God’s specific plan for your life.  God wants you to be aware of your personal talent and He wants you to look around and see where that talent is needed in service to Him.

“I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.”   (1 Corinthians 7:7)

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”   (1 Peter 4:10)

I’m sure you know what your talents are and God has provided you with those talents to serve others in an effort to share God’s love.  This may be part of your daily job or it may be as a volunteer on weekends or it may simply be as a loyal family member or friend.  When and where you fulfill God’s plan for your life will be largely up to you and your effort to find the opportunity He is providing for you.

The Devil May Try to Block God’s Plan

If your efforts to follow God’s plan for your life seem to be blocked or disrupted, it may well be that the devil is intervening to keep you from completing your mission.  Those who are seeking to do God’s will are at the top of Satan’s attack list.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit you will be able to endure these attacks and God will restore you and deliver you out of trouble stronger than ever, so that you can complete the plan He has for you.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.  And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”   (1 Peter 5:8-10)

God’s plan for you and everyone else is that you follow Him.  Unbelievers need to seek out Jesus Christ for salvation.  Believers need to study the Word of God, pray, and seek fellowship with other believers.  Following Jesus is the ultimate plan for us all.

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”  (John 8:12)

God honors those who follow Jesus.  God gives power to those who follow Jesus.  God has a clear plan for those who follow Jesus.

“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”   (John 12:26)

God’s Plan is That You Follow Jesus

God’s plan for you is to follow Jesus and use your specific talents in His service.  God makes you aware of His plan by the circumstances in your life.  Look around your life and see where God is working and consider if your talents can be of help in that effort.  God is placing something in front of you right now that He knows you can help with.  He’s not going to take your hand and drag you into service; He wants you to find where you’re needed and go to work without His urging.

That God has a plan for you Bible verse is actually the entire Bible, not just one verse.  The Bible was written specifically for you.  It’s all about you.  When you read the Word of God, you are in direct communication with God and everything you read is pointing you toward God’s plan for your life.

Jesus summed up God’s plan for you in one brief statement:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”   (Matthew 22:37-40)

God provides you with opportunities to act on this plan every day.  Take advantage of every opportunity and God will continually provide you with more and more opportunities that will make full use of your personal talents.  God wants you to achieve your full potential in service to Him and when you demonstrate that is also your goal, He will trust you with more responsibility and provide you with the strength and wisdom to achieve every task placed before you.
