Anyone can read the Bible in 90 days, but I’m going to show you how to become a Bible expert in 90 days.
Every believer should know the Bible from cover-to-cover. If you’ve never read the Bible from cover-to-cover and you’re a believer, I’m absolutely certain you want that experience; but you have, for whatever reason, deemed it too difficult. The Bible is a big thick book that frankly can be a bit boring in places and downright difficult to understand in other places. My personal opinion is that is precisely the way God designed the Bible. He wants us to read through page after page of genealogy so that we can physically experience the time it took for these events to transpire. He wants us to labor through page after page of Jewish law so that we can fully understand the enormous gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I firmly believe God wants us to read every word of the Bible. I also have a powerful conviction that God wants us to open the Word of God at page one and read straight through to the end, not bounce around from book-to-book, a little from the Old Testament and then a little from the New Testament. That’s fine if you’ve already made your cover-to-cover study, but there’s something amazing that happens when you read the Word of God straight through just as you would any other book. The miraculous nature of how these 66 books came together will blossom into a transforming spiritual experience that will open your eyes to God in a whole new way.
Start With a Quality Bible
To become a Bible expert in 90 days, you will first have to start with an exceptional Bible. I’m going to suggest you get a copy of the New American Standard Ryrie Study Bible, Red Letter Edition. The New American Standard translation is easier to read and considered a more literal rendering of the text. I recommend the Ryrie Study Bible simply because Dr. Charles Ryrie’s notes are concise while at the same time in depth. He writes in a style that is accessible to the average reader rather than the overtly scholarly style of some other study Bible commentators. This Bible contains comprehensive outlines of each book, thousands of explanatory notes, cross-references, concordance, charts, maps, and wide margins for note-taking. This is an exceptional tool and just owning this version of the Bible alone will move you many steps closer to becoming a Bible expert.
Read Along With a Well-Qualified Bible Scholar
Some people shy away from reading the entire Bible because they feel they aren’t qualified to interpret the material. They worry about arriving at wrong conclusions about the text or fear they will get lost and therefore discouraged by the process. This is why I’m going to advise you to read with a back-up Bible scholar. Dr. Ryrie’s help will go a long way toward keeping you on track and fully aware of precisely what it is you’re reading; but there will be times when you want a deeper understanding or just another point of view. My suggestion is to have a complete verse-by-verse Bible commentary on hand to turn to when more detailed analysis is desired. By far the best choice would be the “Thru the Bible” commentary by Dr. J. Vernon McGee. This is a uniquely readable commentary that grew out of Dr. McGee’s Thru the Bible radio broadcast. The warm and friendly conversational style feels like trusted teaching from a beloved grandfather or respected friend. This is not a theological or technical commentary, but a plain spoken explanation of the Word of God. Every time you turn to Dr. McGee for help, you will come away inspired, enlightened, and convicted.
Reinforce Your Reading with a Good Audio Bible
I don’t believe reading the text alone will be enough to fully develop your Bible expertise. You’ll need something more to help reinforce what you’re reading and deliver it into the deeper recesses of your mind. The perfect tool to help you remember more of what you are reading is a quality audio Bible. From my point of view, it’s profoundly important for you to read the Bible and not simply listen to it via an audio Bible. I feel strongly that the experience of holding the Word of God in your hand and reading the words off the page is essential to making a spiritual connection with God. The audio Bible can be used after you’ve read a book to help you recall what you’ve read and assist in building deeper memories of Scripture. For instance, you would study the book of Genesis in your Ryrie Study Bible, using Dr. Ryrie’s notes when needed, and turn to Dr. McGee’s commentary for a deeper understanding when called for. Then follow up by listening to Genesis via your audio Bible while driving to work the next day, or while working out, or going for a walk. This is the process that will build your study into the development of a Bible expert.
There are two wonderful audio Bibles I can recommend. The first is the “The Bible Experience” which features the voices of Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Blair Underwood, Denzel Washington, and many others. The second is “The Word of Promise” which features the voices of Jim Caviezel, Richard Dreyfuss, Gary Sinise, Marisa Tomei, Stacy Keach, Louis Gossett, Jr., Jon Voight, and others. Both of these audio Bibles have beautiful musical scores, and well-crafted Hollywood style sound design that brings the text to life. You can find samples of both versions online. Listen to each and then select the one that works best for you. You can’t go wrong with either production.
Follow a Well Designed Plan
Finally, to complete your transformation into a Bible expert in 90 days, you’ll need an easy to follow reading plan. There are many 90 day Bible reading programs available, and I’ve examined many of them, but never found one I liked. For that reason, I took the time to design my own 90 day Bible reading program based on the outlines found in the Ryrie Study Bible. I’ve posted the entire program here The Bible in 90 Days. I’ve broken the reading up into two segments each day of about 20 – 30 minutes each. The total reading for each day is only 45 minutes to an hour. If you follow this plan, you will complete the entire Bible in 90 days. If you use the Ryrie Study Bible, reading the introduction to each book and using the footnotes as needed, and if you turn to Dr. McGee’s commentary when you feel a deeper understanding is needed, and if you follow the reading by listening to an audio version of the text you just read, you will without question come away a Bible expert in 90 days.
